Supporting local governments in improving access to high-quality, inclusive services for children and families from refugee and migrant backgrounds: shifting from an emergency response to long-term inclusion strategies

TImeframe: April 2025 – June 2026

Project supported by the European Union.

The cities of Nitra and Bratislava, together with Białystok and Lublin in Poland, and Bucharest and Timișoara in Romania, applied for support from the European Commission under Regulation (EU) 2021/240 establishing a Technical Support Instrument (TSI). UNICEF was selected as the implementing partner. In Slovakia, the project serves as a support mechanism for Nitra and Bratislava to address the following challenges: 1/ A lack of migration data at the local level, 2/ Gaps in the legal, strategic, and institutional framework that hinder municipalities from effectively delivering integration services to people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, 3/ Underdeveloped capacities among municipal staff to provide inclusive, high-quality services to migrant and refugee communities.

CVEK’s role in the project entails:

  1. Supporting Nitra and Bratislava in developing concrete action plans for the integration strategies co-created over the past two years,

  2. Assisting in setting up effective systems for collecting and analyzing local data on individuals from migrant and refugee backgrounds,

  3. Delivering training and capacity-building activities to enhance the intercultural communication skills of staff across both municipalities.
