Diversity as an Opportunity: Inclusion Activities for Migrant Students in Secondary Schools

Content:

For decades, the Slovak education system developed within a relatively culturally homogenous environment, leaving schools with limited experience in the systematic inclusion of migrant students. Only in recent years has this topic gained broader public attention. Even so, integration initiatives have largely remained sporadic, uncoordinated, and centered primarily on primary education. Secondary schools have often been left on the sidelines—despite this being a formative stage when young people actively shape their identity, agency, and sense of belonging in society.

To bridge this gap, we developed this methodological guide as a practical toolkit for educators who want to foster an environment where migrant students can integrate naturally, without undue pressure, and on equal footing with their peers. The manual features a series of month-by-month activities designed to encourage inclusion, intercultural understanding, and a stronger sense of school community. Built with flexibility in mind, each activity outlines clear learning objectives, step-by-step instructions, time allocations, and practical delivery tips.

The guide acts as an adaptable, open-ended framework that schools can easily tailor to their capacities and their students’ evolving needs.

The project was supported by the Telekom Endowment Fund at the Pontis Foundation.
